Cyclone Ditwah Emergency & Disaster Relief

Supporting families affected by flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka

Cyclone Ditwah was among the most intense and destructive cyclones in Sri Lanka’s recent history. It swept across most parts of the island with powerful winds of around 70 knots and exceptionally heavy rainfall, reaching nearly 400 cm in some areas. Rivers overflowed their banks, causing severe flooding, while landslides tore through vulnerable regions. The cyclone resulted in widespread devastation to lives, homes, infrastructure and livelihoods across the country.

Although the cyclone passed by 4 December 2025, its impact continues to be deeply felt. Many families remain displaced, communities are still isolated, and essential services have been severely disrupted. For thousands of families, recovery is far from complete.

Our Emergency Response

In response, CandleAid Lanka, working through its network of volunteer coordinators across the island, launched an emergency relief operation to reach affected communities and address urgent unmet needs. Initial support focused on providing essential dry rations, household items, livelihood recovery assistance, and support for vulnerable households and children impacted by the disaster.

As many families lost all their belongings, CandleAid prioritised assistance for children by providing books, shoes and school uniforms, followed by dry rations and other essential household items such as bedsheets, pillows, towels and basic necessities.

Support was extended through schools, temples, churches, shelters and other community institutions caring for displaced families. CandleAid’s network of supporters in Sri Lanka and around the world also stepped forward in solidarity to help those most affected.

Continuing Support & Hope

While much of the country is gradually returning to normalcy, many affected families are still struggling to rebuild their lives. CandleAid Lanka remains committed to standing with these families, restoring safety, dignity and hope as they continue their journey toward recovery.
