SPECIAL FUND (FOOD)

Having suffered two and more years of unprecedented devastation and trauma, the world hailed 2022 as the dawn of a year of healing the wounds of COVID and building people’s fragmented lives and livelihoods. COVID was not in a hurry to exit but the world kept pushing it relentlessly, weakening its hold on our lives.

Sri Lankans too were euphoric in their desire to move on mending their disheveled lives. Yet fate had another plan for us – we plunged into a dark well of immense hardship; mentally, emotionally, physically and financially.

The poor got poorer, and the low-income earners became income-less. CandleAid could not ignore their cries for assistance. So, in June 2022 we established the above fund to relieve them of their hunger. Over 1,000 families from north to south, east to west were provided dry rations to the value of LKR 10,000 per family. CandleAid’s host of volunteer coordinators took up the challenge to identify, screen, document and supply these families their quota of food stuff. They lit little candles that expelled the darkness that had engulfed the recipient families with hopelessness.

CandleAid also reached hungry children in schools who could not keep their heads up due to the severe hunger pangs in their bellies. CandleAid facilitated one square meal per day, giving them much needed energy to sustain their education.

CandleAid thanks its amazing network of donors who fattened the fund so spontaneously, without whose benevolence this initiative could not have taken off. CandleAid also thanks the host of coordinators from all walks of life and different ethnicities and religions without whose commitment this task could not have succeeded.
