Urubokka
Preschool
|
|
The
distance between the urban Tanglin School in Singapore and the small rural
preschool in Urubokke, southern Sri Lanka, can be measured in more than
just miles. Helen Sampson, a CandleAid supporter in Singapore, facilitated
her children’s school to collect money for a project in Sri Lanka. Their
donation was utilized to help a preschool in Urubokka catering to children
from low income families. Rajitha
Fernando, a CandleAid director who is also a participant of the Friends of
the Urubokke Mission, personally coordinates this project.
The
children of Tanglin collected SGD 900 for the children of Urubokke. The
children raised the money by selling tea towels that were decorated with
their handprints. The money was used to build toilet facilities at the
Urubokke school and provide educational equipment and toys. A nutritious
meal is also being supplied from the funds collected by the Tanglin School,
which continues its assistance with further donations

Wewalawewa
MV 'A' Level students get shelter
|
|
Until a
few days ago, Wewelawewa MV near Dambulla, a school which accommodates over
700 students was lacking proper
classroom facilities for their Advanced
level students. This problem, having persisted for a long time
recently drove the students and parents to step forward to construct a
classroom. In order to help them,
the principal of the school requested a donation from CandleAid for 28
roofing sheets costing Rs. 50,400.
CandleAid-
having previously provided a library, books and stationary for the school
in 2009 was glad to help. Its
generous donors contributed the money and
the roofing sheets were purchased and given to the school where they
have been used in the construction of the required classroom. These young people can now sit and learn
in a class with a roof over their heads, as they prepare for their exams.
